Convert your static website to Content Management System
A
static website
is a website that is designed, created and then hosted by a website designer and is usually programmed using a static language like HTML or XHTML. Once the website is online, any changes that are needed require a website designer, or someone that knows how to edit, create or delete web pages. Typically, static websites are much simpler to create a content managed website, due to the fact that no database needs to be created.You may be happy with the design of your website but would like the ability to change and add to the content yourself. Rather than have your entire website redesigned, you could get it converted to a CMS site. A dynamic Website, unlike a static Web site, can give the Web site owner the ability to simply update and add new content to the site.
Static web pages are easy to create, but they can become difficult to maintain over time, even if you use a template-based editor like Dream weaver. Content Management Systems (CMS) are website publishing systems that simplify editing and managing your website. Many CMSs feature special publishing tools, such as blogs and photo galleries. The site template (headers, footers, menus and so on) are handled by the CMS, leaving you to focus on the content of each page. Most CMSs are database-driven. http://www.biztechconsultancy.com/dynamic-website.htm WordPress, Joomla, Drupal and Movable Type are among the most popular CMSs.
If a business decides that they want to sell their products online, update their website content when they need to and capture customer details, then a content management system is more than likely to be the best solution. A content management system is a system that allows users to add, edit, update and delete their website content quickly and easily through the use of an administration section on their website and a database (usually MySQL, MSSQL or Access.) Content management systems use server side scripting languages such as PHP, ASP or ASP.net. The database is used to store information that the user enters via the administration section, and data is retrieved from it each time a user accesses the content managed website.
Converting a static site to a content managed one involves the following steps:
- Create a new web page in your CMS editor. The editing tools for your site are generally found in the CMS site administration, dashboard or manager.
- Open one of your static web pages in a new web browser window. It is easiest to start with your home page and work from the upper-level pages down to the lower-level pages.
- Type or copy the page title in the title field in your CMS editor. Transfer any additional page information, such as author, tags and keywords, to appropriate CMS editor fields if available. Some of these items, like keywords and description, may be set in the static web page’s metadata. Use your web browser’s “View Source” tool to view the metadata in the page header so you can transfer it to the CMS editor.
- Select the main content of the page. Do not select the header, footer, menu, sidebars or other items that are part of your overall site template. Select “Copy” from the “Edit” menu.
- Paste the static page’s main content into the CMS editor’s main editor window. Most CMSs support “rich text” copy and paste. If so, your content appears formatted like it was on the static web page. Touch up the formatting using the editor’s formatting tools.
- Set the category, menu location, page order and/or page parent to set where your page fits into your site organization. This is different for each CMS.
- Save your page in the CMS editor. If there is a “Save As a Draft” or “Save and Preview” option, select it and review your work. Some CMSs do not have a draft mode. When you are satisfied, publish your page in the CMS editor to make it viewable on your website.
- Repeat these steps for each static web page on your site. When you are finished, you can delete the old static web pages and any other content you did not use on your new CMS-based site. Leave photos, videos and other files embedded in your new pages.
